Almost every week, someone sends us a message that goes something like this: "Hi, I'd like a new smile in Turkey. Should I get zirconium crowns or E-max veneers?"
It's a fair question. Both names come up constantly when you start researching smile makeovers in Turkey, and online it can look like they're just two versions of the same thing. They aren't. They're designed for different situations, and picking the wrong one can mean losing more of your natural tooth than you ever needed to.
So let's talk it through properly, the same way we would if you were sitting in our clinic in Antalya.
Two Treatments, Two Different Jobs
Think of a zirconium crown as a protective cap. It covers the whole tooth: the front, the back, the sides and the biting surface. Zirconia is an incredibly tough ceramic, so a crown made from it can hold together a tooth that's broken, worn down or weakened by old fillings.
An E-max veneer is something else entirely. It's a thin shell of glass-ceramic that's bonded only to the front of the tooth. It doesn't hold anything together. Its job is to change how the tooth looks: the colour, the shape, the length, a small chip or a gap.
So the real question isn't "which one is better?" It's "what's actually going on with my teeth?" If you'd like the general background first, our guide to tooth crowns vs veneers covers the basics.
If Your Teeth Are Healthy, We'll Usually Talk About Veneers
Many of the people who contact us have perfectly healthy teeth. They're just unhappy with the colour, or a few teeth are slightly uneven, or the edges have chipped over the years.
In that situation, crowning every tooth would be overkill. To fit a crown, the tooth has to be reduced on all sides. With an E-max veneer, we usually only need to remove a thin layer of enamel from the front, and sometimes very little at all.
E-max also happens to look beautiful. Natural teeth aren't flat white; light passes slightly through the edges, and E-max copies that translucency really well. That's why it's our usual choice for the front teeth, the ones everyone sees when you smile or talk. You can read more about the benefits of E-max in our separate guide.
E-max veneers: one of our patients' results
We know "Turkey teeth" has a bad reputation in some places, largely because of photos of healthy teeth shaved down to small pegs. Our clinic's motto is primum non nocere, "first, do no harm", and we take it seriously. If your teeth don't need crowns, we won't suggest them.
When Zirconium Crowns Make More Sense
Now, not every tooth is a good candidate for a veneer. A veneer needs a solid, healthy tooth underneath it. If a tooth is cracked, heavily filled, badly worn or has had a root canal, we need to assess its remaining structure, the location of any damage and the bite before recommending a restoration. A root canal alone does not mean every tooth needs a crown; a veneer may not provide the coverage a weakened tooth needs.
That's where zirconium crowns earn their place. Zirconia is one of the strongest materials we have, which is why we also use it on back teeth that take the full force of chewing, on dental implants, and in full-arch treatments like all-on-4 and all-on-6. Our article on when to use zirconia goes into more detail.
There's another situation where zirconia helps: very dark teeth. A tooth that has turned grey after a root canal, for example, can be hard to hide under a translucent veneer. Zirconia is a little more opaque, so it masks dark colours much better. Modern high-translucency zirconia also looks far more natural than older crowns did, so you don't have to worry about that flat, chalky look you might remember from years ago. Our zirconium crowns before and after photos show what that looks like in practice.

Some Smiles Benefit from a Combination
Some patients may benefit from a combination of restorations, depending on the condition of each tooth.
Say your four upper front teeth are healthy but discoloured, and two teeth beside them have large old fillings. In that case, it makes sense to place E-max veneers on the healthy teeth and zirconium crowns on the weakened ones. Careful shade matching and digital smile design can help the different restorations blend together. The final appearance depends on the teeth, materials and individual treatment plan.
This is why we're cautious about fixed "package deals" that offer the same treatment for every tooth. Your teeth aren't all in the same condition, so they shouldn't all get the same treatment.
What About the Cost in Turkey?
Both zirconium crowns and E-max veneers cost considerably less in Turkey than in the UK, Ireland, the US or most of Western Europe. That's a big part of why so many people now choose Antalya for their dental treatment. For a general idea of what affects pricing, see our guide to the cost of zirconia crowns and veneers in Turkey.

We can't give an honest price without seeing your teeth, though. The final cost depends on how many teeth need work, whether you need anything first (like fillings, gum treatment or root canals), and whether implants are involved. If you send us a few clear photos of your smile and a recent X-ray if you have one, our dentists will look at your case and send you a personal plan and quote. You can message us on WhatsApp to get started.
How Long Will You Need to Stay in Antalya?
For most patients, both treatments can be done in one trip, usually around five to seven days. On the first visit we examine your teeth, take X-rays and plan your new smile digitally. Then we prepare the teeth, take impressions and fit temporaries while the lab makes your final restorations. Before anything is fixed in place, you'll try them in so we can check the shape, colour and bite together. Only when you're happy do we bond or cement them. Our step-by-step guide explains how zirconium crown and veneer treatment is done.
Full mouth of zirconium crowns
The days in between are yours. Plenty of our patients spend them on the beach at Konyaaltı or wandering around the old town of Kaleiçi. It's not a bad place to wait for a new smile.
So, Which One Is Right for You?
If your teeth are healthy and you mainly want them to look better, E-max veneers are usually the gentler and more natural-looking choice. If some teeth are damaged or weakened, zirconium crowns may be appropriate when full coverage is needed. In some cases, a combination of restorations may be recommended after an examination.

What matters most is that someone actually examines your teeth and explains why they're recommending a treatment. If a clinic can't tell you that, it's worth asking more questions.
Questions We Hear a Lot
Is Zirconia Stronger Than E-max?
Zirconia generally has higher material strength than E-max lithium disilicate. However, material strength alone does not determine the right restoration. The choice depends on the remaining tooth structure, enamel available for bonding, bite and clinical examination.
Will Zirconium Crowns Look Fake?
They shouldn't. A "fake" look usually comes from shades that are far too white and teeth that are too bulky, not from the material. With the right shade and natural shapes, zirconium crowns blend in well.
Can I Have Veneers Instead of Crowns So I Keep More of My Teeth?
If your teeth are healthy and have enough enamel, often yes. If a tooth is broken or weakened, a crown or another restoration may be more appropriate. A dentist needs to assess the remaining tooth structure and bite before recommending treatment.
Do They Stain?
Very little. Both materials resist coffee, tea and red wine much better than natural teeth or composite bonding. Regular cleaning keeps them looking fresh. We cover this in more depth in do dental veneers stain?
Can I Whiten Them Later?
No. Ceramic doesn't respond to whitening. If you'd like your natural teeth whiter too, it's best to have teeth whitening before your crowns or veneers are made, so we can match the shade.
How Do I Find Out Which One I Need?
Send us your photos and any recent X-rays. Our dentists in Antalya will review them and tell you honestly what they'd recommend before you book anything.
If you're still unsure, that's completely normal. Get in touch with us at Monarch Smile Turkey and we'll talk it through with you.
